Professional Editing for Authors, Researchers and Organisati

Person sitting next to a tall stack of books against a plain wall.

Published author • Educator • Health communication specialist

Professional editing for authors, researchers and organisations: clear, thoughtful editing from a published author, educator, and specialist in health communication.

Great writing deserves expert editing. Whether you're preparing a book for publication, polishing professional documents, refining educational resources, or creating clear healthcare and research communications, I offer a range of editorial services to support you at every stage of the writing process.

Combining the eye of an editor with the experience of a published author, educator, and specialist in health communication, I help writers produce work that is accurate, engaging, and fit for its intended audience.

I work with authors, professionals, charities, researchers, educators, and organisations on a wide range of projects, including fiction and non-fiction books, website content, reports, educational materials, patient information leaflets, public engagement resources, lay summaries, and other healthcare and research communications. Every project receives the same careful attention to detail, whether it's a short document or a full-length manuscript.

Every project is unique, and the level of editing required can vary depending on the length, complexity, and stage of development. The prices listed here are typical, but I always provide an individual quote so you know exactly what to expect before we begin. If you'd like to discuss your work and receive a tailored quotation, please get in touch.

Please note: These services are intended for authors, professionals, organisations, and independent publishers. They do not include editing or proofreading of assessed academic work, including assignments for National 5, Higher, college, or university students. My tutoring services for school and university learners remain completely separate.

How it Works

  •  Send me your manuscript.
  • I'll provide a fixed quote.
  • We'll agree a turnaround date.
  • You'll receive the services you've selected, which may include:

                              tracked changes

                              a clean copy

                              editorial comments

                              follow-up support

Why Work With Me?

Writing well is about more than avoiding mistakes. It's about communicating your ideas clearly, engaging your audience, and producing work you're proud to share. As a published author, educator, and professional editor, I've spent years helping people communicate complex ideas with clarity and confidence.

My background spans publishing, education, healthcare, and research communication. Alongside editing books for independent authors, I work with researchers, charities, educators, and organisations to improve reports, educational resources, patient information, public engagement materials, and other professional documents. This breadth of experience means I understand how writing changes depending on its audience and purpose, whether you're telling a compelling story, explaining research to the public, or producing polished professional content.

When I edit your work, my aim isn't to rewrite it in my own style. Instead, I strengthen what is already there by improving clarity, flow, consistency, and readability, while preserving your voice. Every edit is thoughtful, constructive, and tailored to your goals, helping your writing make the strongest possible impression.

Typical Projects

 I regularly edit:

  • Fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Memoirs and biographies
  • Educational resources
  • Healthcare publications
  • Patient information leaflets
  • Research plain-English summaries
  • Public engagement materials
  • Reports and policy documents
  • Charity publications
  • Website copy
  • Training manuals
  • Professional presentations

Copyediting

I focus on the details that make your writing clean and consistent: grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style. I’ll also flag unclear or repetitive sentences and suggest ways to make your writing flow more smoothly, while keeping your voice intact.

Typical rate: £60 per 1,000 words

Proofreading

A final check before publication to catch typos, errors, and formatting slips. Proofreading ensures your work looks polished and professional once it’s out in the world.

Typical rate: £50 per 1,000 words

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing looks at the 'big picture.' Instead of fixing commas, I reshape your work at the structural level: clarifying your book’s purpose and audience, building a clear framework (e.g. daily prompts, sections, or chapters), cutting repetition, balancing narrative, and making sure every section delivers on the promise of your book.

Rates:

  • Short to mid-length manuscripts (up to 50,000 words): £1,200 - £2,600
  • Full-length manuscripts (50,000+ words): £2,600–£4,100 depending on length and complexity

Every developmental edit includes:

  • A fully marked-up manuscript with tracked changes and comments
  • A short editorial report outlining big-picture recommendations
  • One follow-up call/email round to discuss the changes

Ongoing Support

If you prefer to work gradually, I can step in as you revise - reviewing new drafts, polishing prompts or exercises, checking consistency, or answering specific editorial questions.

  • £60 per hour
  • £400 per day (up to 7 hours)
  • £50 per 1,000 words for proofing revised text

Disclaimer

By booking editing or proofreading services, you agree to the following terms:

  • All work remains the responsibility of the author. I will not write, rewrite, or generate content on your behalf.
  • I do not accept academic assignments for proofreading or editing. This includes work for school, college, or university (e.g. Nat 5, Highers, undergraduate or postgraduate essays). Submitting edited work as your own in those contexts may breach plagiarism rules.
  • My role is to strengthen clarity, flow, structure, and consistency. Final decisions on content, argument, and accuracy rest with you as the author.
  • Developmental editing and ongoing support are advisory in nature. Implementation of suggested changes is at your discretion.
  • All fees are agreed in advance. Work begins once payment terms have been confirmed.

A note on plagiarism

I will never write or rewrite your work for you in a way that compromises originality. My role is to polish and strengthen what you have written, not to create material that could be considered plagiarism. For student assignments in particular, I will not provide editing or proofing services, as these must be the student’s own work.
